<graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" alt-version="yes" xlink:href="https://www.j-micropalaeontol.net/30/187/2011/jm-2011-15-f01.png"/></fig>The sub-cosmopolitan limnic ostracod genus <italic>Cypridea</italic> Bosquet, 1852 (<italic>sensu</italic> <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b10">Horne &amp; Colin, 2005</xref>) is known from the Lower Tithonian (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b12">Mart&#xED;n-Closas <italic>et al</italic>., 2008</xref>) to the Aptian, with a maximum development during the Berriasian to Barremian (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b9">Horne, 1995</xref>), in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, North and South America. In the Far East (China, Mongolia) and Alaska it ranges up to the Cretaceous&#x2013;Tertiary boundary (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b2">Brouwers &amp; De Deckker, 1993</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b11">Khand, 2000</xref>). In North Africa (Tunisia), the youngest occurrences of this genus were, until now, in the Late Aptian (Abdeljaouad, unpubl. data and Ben Youssef, unpubl. data <italic>in</italic> <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b1">Bismuth, 1984</xref>). In Tunisia, the genus <italic>Cypridea</italic> is known in pre-Aptian sediments in the &#x2018;Wealdien-Neocomian&#x2019; as documented by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b6">Glintzboeckel &amp; Magn&#xE9; (1959)</xref>.</p>
<p>Except for the Far East, the presence of <italic>Cypridea</italic> in post-Aptian sediments is very rare. It has been documented in the Albian of the Bear River Formation of Wyoming, USA (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b13">Peck, 1951</xref>), the Albian-Cenomanian Loia &#x2018;stage&#x2019; (Lualaba Series) of the central Congo Democratic Republic (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b7">Gr&#xE9;koff, 1957</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b8">1960</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b4">Colin, 1994</xref>), the Early Albian-Aptian of the Doba-Doseo basins in Chad and the Muglad basin in Sudan (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b5">Colin &amp; D&#xE9;p&#xEA;che, 1997</xref>) and the Albian-Cenomanian of the Termit basin in Niger (J.-P.C. unpubl. data).</p>
<p>Recent field work in central Tunisia (Jebel Kebar) yielded samples of limestone containing the genus <italic>Cypridea</italic> in two sections in the lower part of the Kebar Formation (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b15">Trabelsi <italic>et al</italic>., 2010</xref>). A very rich and diversified charophyte assemblage with <italic>Sphaerochara verticillata</italic> (Peck, 1937) Peck, 1957, <italic>Atopochara trivolvis trivolvis</italic> Peck, 1968, <italic>Clavator harrisii zavialensis</italic> (Grambast-Fessard, 1980) emend. Mart&#xED;n-Closas, 1996 and <italic>Sphaerochara verticillata. kebariensis</italic> <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b15">Trabelsi, 2010</xref>, clearly assigned an Early Albian age to the horizon containing <italic>Cypridea</italic>.</p>
<p>Ostracods were extracted from the hard limestone by chemical processing (acetic acid and copper sulphate as described in <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b15">Trabelsi <italic>et al</italic>., 2010</xref>), which explains the preservation state of the specimens recovered. In addition to <italic>Cypridea</italic>, the ostracod assemblage (Trabelsi <italic>et al.,</italic> work in progress) contains the Timiriaseviinae <italic>Vecticypris</italic> cf. <italic>polita</italic> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b7">Gr&#xE9;koff, 1957</xref>) and two species of Darwinulidae, clearly indicating a true lacustrine environment.</p>
<p>The species of <italic>Cypridea</italic> identified is rather large (1.0&#x2013;1.1&#x2009;mm), smooth, possess a small rostrum and a rather long and deep alveolus, and has a normal overlap (RV&lt;LV). These characters suggest strong morphological affinities with the Berriasian to Aptian species of the <italic>Cypridea laevigata</italic> (Dunker,  1846)/<italic>Cypridea setina</italic> (Anderson, 1939) lineage <italic>sensu</italic> <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b14">Schudack &amp; Schudack (2009)</xref>. The youngest known well dated species of this lineage is <italic>Cypridea</italic> cf. <italic>laevigata leonardi</italic> Anderson, 1967, reported and illustrated by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b3">Cabral (1998)</xref> from the Early Aptian of Algarve, southern Portugal.</p>
