Short summary
Short summary
In this study, we propose an age framework for an interval of 4.8–3.1 million years ago, using fossil records of marine plankton such as diatoms and radiolarians derived from a sediment core collected in the Southern Ocean. Specifically, a total of 19 bioevents (i.e., extinction/appearance events of selected age marker species) were detected, and their precise ages were calculated. The updated biostratigraphy will contribute to future paleoceanographic work in the Southern Ocean.

Short summary
Short summary
The Totten Glacier (Sabrina Coast, East Antarctica) has undergone significant retreat in recent years, underlining its sensitivity to climate change and its potential contribution to global sea-level rise. The melting process is strongly influenced by ocean dynamics and the spatial distribution of water masses appears to be linked to the complex morpho-bathymetry of the area, supporting the hypothesis that downwelling processes contribute to shaping the architecture of the continental margin.

Short summary
Diatoms are a group of algae found in the fossil record. They are used to understand past environmental conditions and to determine the age of sediment. In the Southern Ocean, the waters surrounding Antarctica, diatoms are among the few fossils found in sediments. Using material collected during International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 382, we refine the ages of diatom origination and extinction dates. This provides more detailed time constraints when using Southern Ocean diatoms.
