Short summary
This study analyzed foraminifera in Indo-Pacific (Indonesia) seafloor sediments from transitional to deep-ocean environments. Our findings reveal a fundamental ecological pattern: environmental controls shift systematically from physical forces in shallow waters to chemical factors in deep waters. This validates ecological theory in tropical settings for the first time, enabling scientists to accurately determine ancient water depths from fossil assemblages preserved in Indonesian seas.
